The three Marathon broccoli seeds that we sowed a couple of weeks ago all germinated, so that's good news for the germination of this packet of seed! We don't just let the trial seedlings go to waste, so we have now pricked these out into 3" pots. We will grow them on in these until... Continue Reading →
Yellow Mimi progress
The Yellow Mimi tomatoes are growing pretty rapidly. This first photo was taken on Saturday 29 January. This was just before we potted them up into 3" square pots in multipurpose compost. And here's how one of them is looking a week later on 5 February. At the moment, we are growing these on in... Continue Reading →
Pricking out the Tasty King cucumbers
Last weekend, our Tasty King cucumbers needed pricking out. Firstly we prepared the pots. These are 3" square pots which we half filled with multipurpose compost. An addition we made to the compost was perlite. This can be added to compost to improve drainage as perlite is very porous and can soak up excess water.... Continue Reading →
Yellow Mimi tomatoes
It didn't take long for our Yellow Mimi tomatoes to germinate, which is great news! Therefore, we pricked them out into a good quality, fine compost and they will grow on in these cells for a few weeks. They are currently being looked after in Dad's greenhouse as that's heated and the seedlings need some... Continue Reading →
The peppers needed pricking out
Last weekend, some of our peppers needed pricking out. For those of you totally new to growing, "pricking out" is the term used for transplanting recently germinated seedlings into their first pot or cell tray. After this, it is typically referred to as "potting on" or "planting out" depending on whether you're upgrading the plant's... Continue Reading →
Our best bits from 2021
Although we've got through the shortest day back in December (and Blue Monday earlier in the week), this is still my least favourite time of the year. The nights might be drawing out, but not quick enough, and its cold, wet and more often than not frosty and or foggy. Therefore, what better time to... Continue Reading →
New year, new crops
It's been a while since we last posted, but one of our New Year's Resolutions is to pick up the frequency of our posts again. It's much easier to do that once we get into the spring and summer months, but that doesn't mean there's nothing at all going on in the garden at the... Continue Reading →
An exciting update for our vegetable patch!
I mentioned in one of our recent blog posts that since moving into our own house, we don't have much of a set up in place for growing vegetables. However, we're still keen to grow a few bits and pieces in 2021. Although we haven't quite worked out what and where we're going to grow... Continue Reading →
A colourful update
As there's not much growing at this time of the year, we thought we'd provide a quick update on something that we're growing that is loving the colder weather! Our primroses certainly don't seem to be affected by the colder weather (albeit I'm not sure they have loved being covered in the snow that they... Continue Reading →
Sugar snap pea update
It didn't take the sugar snap peas long to germinate. This is a photo a week after sowing, but they were starting to poke their heads through 3 or 4 days in. Again, we've had pretty good germination, with just the odd seed not germinating - it's always to be expected. As soon as the... Continue Reading →
