The cucumbers growing in the greenhouse are growing away well and we have started picking the Tasty King, Nimrod and Mini Munch The plants really are prolific. You can see from the photo below just how many fruits there are on each plant, and they are quite close together which means you can pack more... Continue Reading →
Miscellaneous garden updates
Our salad crops have done quite well this year. The radishes are pretty much finished now and are starting to go to seed. This tends to happen once it gets too warm, so you have to eat them quickly when they're ready! The salad leaves are growing well and we've started eating these. We're hopeful... Continue Reading →
The peppers needed pricking out
Last weekend, some of our peppers needed pricking out. For those of you totally new to growing, "pricking out" is the term used for transplanting recently germinated seedlings into their first pot or cell tray. After this, it is typically referred to as "potting on" or "planting out" depending on whether you're upgrading the plant's... Continue Reading →
Our first seed sowing of 2022…peppers!
It's always exciting to start sowing seeds for the new year, and as we've said before, peppers take a fair while to grow, so they're our first! This year we had planned to focus on sweet peppers rather than chillies - although we like the odd chilli in a chill con carne or curry or... Continue Reading →
Pepper pick-me-up
We've had our sweet peppers and chillies growing on in the greenhouse, but it was time to give them some attention as they were starting to get quite tall. There wasn't enough space in the greenhouse to keep them all in there, so a few plants have now been moved outside, but the remainder have... Continue Reading →
Latest progress in the greenhouse
As well as the tomatoes, we also have some cucumbers and peppers growing in the greenhouse. And we have our first pepper, Redskin formed. The rest of the plants all have plenty of flowers on, but we haven't found any more peppers that have formed yet. We are keeping our eyes peeled though! The Striped... Continue Reading →
The greenhouse is filling up!
Last weekend, we filled the beds in the greenhouse with some top soil. We can now grow vegetables direct in the beds, or most likely, in containers that we stand on top of the soil in the beds. We'll make sure that the pots have holes in the bottom though, both for drainage, and also... Continue Reading →
Daddy (seed) day care
We haven’t managed to get ourselves set up with much by way of gardening equipment at the new house yet. We haven’t even decided what we’d like to do with the garden to put our own print on it, let alone decided whther we might like to have/where we might like to put more permanent... Continue Reading →
Colourful capsicums
Since the last update, the peppers have just kept coming. It's helped by the warm sunny weather, meaning the peppers are ripening fast. Within a week, the D'Asti Giallo pepper has completely ripened. I'm extremely proud of my first ever homegrown bell pepper! In connected news, the next one is ripening. So fingers crossed this... Continue Reading →
A rainbow of peppers
After reporting that some of the peppers had started to ripen the other week, they've really got a wiggle on and we've got lots and lots of peppers ripening now. There are a whole array of colours on the Basket of Fire now - yellow, orange, red and purple! We'll have to have a chilli... Continue Reading →
