We've enjoyed the Cascadia sugar snap peas so much the last couple of years that we're going to grow them again in 2022. As usual, we sowed the seeds in small cell trays (40 to a seed tray) and then covered these with newspaper until they started germinating, keeping the compost moist as required. A... Lett-uce compare
After our first sowing of Little Gem lettuces not germinating earlier in the year, the new packet of seed we used for the second sowing germinated well and we planted these out a few weeks ago. We did a little experiment with these, planting most of the plants out into a container, and the remaining... Continue Reading →
What have we been up to?
I'm conscious that we haven't published any blog posts for a few weeks now, but that doesn't mean we haven't been busy in the garden, amongst other things! Sometimes in our garden, and sometimes at Mum and Dad's. However, we want to bring you up to date with where we are with things, so we'll... Continue Reading →
Pepper progress
We sowed a few varieties of peppers earlier in the year and we thought we'd share an update on where we're at with a couple of those. A further update on other varieties to come! These are the Vampire peppers, a variety we haven't tried before, but known for its purple foliage and stems. Well... Continue Reading →
Planting out our Little Gem lettuces
We're doing a bit of a trial with the Little Gem lettuces that we sowed a couple of weeks back. Some of the plants we planted out into pots and Dad is going to grow these on in his cold greenhouse. We have also planted some out into a pot and we're going to grow... Continue Reading →
Pricking out our Vampire peppers
After a few weeks in their cell trays, the Vampire peppers were ready to be potted up. These went into multipurpose compost in 3" square pots. We filled each pot, gently compressing the compost as we filled it so there weren't any air gaps for when the pepper plant was potted on. Next up, we... Continue Reading →
Pricking out some of our tomatoes, and sowing a few more varieties!
It didn't take our initial sowing of tomatoes long to germinate - under a week in fact! Here, we're pricking some of the Pink Honeymoon out into cell trays. Unfortunately these had got slightly leggy waiting for us to get to Mum and Dad's to prick them out at the weekend, but fear not, we... Continue Reading →
Quick progress update now we’re in to March
After our initial bumpy ride with the Little Gem lettuce, they're now romping away in their cell tray. As lettuces are relatively hardy, these have now been moved into our greenhouse which is unheated, and they're growing away nicely. Fingers crossed that in a couple of weeks they will be ready to plant out into... Continue Reading →
More success with the Little Gem lettuces the second time round!
We're going to assume that we were right about the first packet of Little Gem seeds no longer being viable, as we sowed these ones in exactly the same way and the germination rate (as you can see!) is much, much better! Therefore last weekend, we pricked the seedlings out into the below cell tray... Continue Reading →
An update on 2022 progress so far
Over the past couple of weeks, we've been sowing a number of different seeds. Therefore, we thought we'd provide an update on where they're all at now. First up, we have the Tasty King cucumbers. They're growing on quite well in their 3" pots and are starting to form their first true leaves. As we... Continue Reading →
