The Diva cucumber plant is really taking off now. This is a great variety which produces lovely mini cucumbers which are great to snack on! In the left hand photo, we've got one that's nearly ready to harvest, and the right hand photo shows two more little cucumbers that are on their way. And then... Continue Reading →
The summer harvest continues
We had a very colourful harvest one day last week: cucumber, courgettes, tomatoes and strawberries! It's all worth it when you get to harvest some lovely homegrown fruit/veg and eat them! First up we've got a Tasty King cucumber. Although the plant still isn't that strong, it's producing some half decent little cucumbers. They're certainly... Continue Reading →
Latest progress in the greenhouse
As well as the tomatoes, we also have some cucumbers and peppers growing in the greenhouse. And we have our first pepper, Redskin formed. The rest of the plants all have plenty of flowers on, but we haven't found any more peppers that have formed yet. We are keeping our eyes peeled though! The Striped... Continue Reading →
Our new cucumber varieties
Luckily, our Striped Armenian cucumbers are starting to pick up after an initial strike on being moved to our greenhouse. One is doing better than the other (this being the better one). I think they've improved for two reasons: 1. We started giving them more water; and 2. we gave them sun hats (yes, that... Continue Reading →
Maintenance required in the greenhouse
After a couple of weeks of throwing water around in the greenhouse keeping the tomatoes, aubergines and peppers topped up with food and drink, you've guess it - we've got weeds! Below are "before" and "after" photos. It didn't take long, but I made sure to get up extra early to get in there and... Continue Reading →
Cucumber chaos
We've got a few varieties of cucumbers underway: Tasty King, Diva, Salt and Pepper and Striped Armenian. The Tasty King and Diva were sown first. As you can see, the Tasty King is starting to develop a couple of cucumbers now. And the Diva is even further ahead, as we harvested our first cucumber this... Continue Reading →
Planting out our cucumbers
We are trying a couple of new varieties of cucumbers this year, Salt and Pepper and Striped Armenian. Last weekend, it was time to plant them out in the greenhouse. We've put them in the corners of the greenhouse as you can see below. We planted them out in bottomless pots which we pushed into... Continue Reading →
The greenhouse is filling up!
Last weekend, we filled the beds in the greenhouse with some top soil. We can now grow vegetables direct in the beds, or most likely, in containers that we stand on top of the soil in the beds. We'll make sure that the pots have holes in the bottom though, both for drainage, and also... Continue Reading →
Update on our Easter cucurbit sowings
It doesn't take courgettes and cucumbers long to germinate. As with our pak choi seedlings, these are pricked out into 3" pots in multipurpose compost. The plants will grow on in these pots until they are ready to plant out. These will need to be kept under glass until the risk of frost has passed,... Continue Reading →
Easter seed sowing
We managed to make some time (between eating chocolate eggs and lots of other home baked goodies!) to do some gardening on Easter Sunday. This time, it was sowing some more courgettes, and sowing our first cucumbers of the season. The varieties we've gone for are: Piccolo - an round/oval shaped green striped courgette. They...
