Our salad crops have done quite well this year. The radishes are pretty much finished now and are starting to go to seed. This tends to happen once it gets too warm, so you have to eat them quickly when they're ready! The salad leaves are growing well and we've started eating these. We're hopeful... Continue Reading →
The latest from our little garden
We wanted to give you an update on some of the other things we've got growing in the garden at the moment which haven't managed to feature in a post of their own. We planted out a couple of cucumber plants the other weekend, Salt n Pepper, Nimrod and Mini Munch. These have now been... Continue Reading →
Lett-uce compare
After our first sowing of Little Gem lettuces not germinating earlier in the year, the new packet of seed we used for the second sowing germinated well and we planted these out a few weeks ago. We did a little experiment with these, planting most of the plants out into a container, and the remaining... Continue Reading →
Planting out our Little Gem lettuces
We're doing a bit of a trial with the Little Gem lettuces that we sowed a couple of weeks back. Some of the plants we planted out into pots and Dad is going to grow these on in his cold greenhouse. We have also planted some out into a pot and we're going to grow... Continue Reading →
More success with the Little Gem lettuces the second time round!
We're going to assume that we were right about the first packet of Little Gem seeds no longer being viable, as we sowed these ones in exactly the same way and the germination rate (as you can see!) is much, much better! Therefore last weekend, we pricked the seedlings out into the below cell tray... Continue Reading →
Our first failure of 2022
We sowed some Little Gem lettuce a couple of weeks ago, but unfortunately this is it in terms of germination. There is one seedling that has germinated properly, and then a couple that have germinated but with no leaves forming. It was an older packet of seed that we had sown some from last year,... Container growing continues
Our onions are starting to bulb up now. Fingers crossed they carry on bulbing up to a good size before they stop growing. However, it probably won't be that long before they stop throwing up new leaves at which point they won't swell any more. On that basis, we are giving them a little bit... Continue Reading →
A further update on our outdoor container crops
It's still a bit cold for lots of vegetables outside at the moment, especially because of the frosts we seem to keep having overnight! However, we've got some relatively hardy crops that we started off a month or so ago. The Little Gem lettuces are not quite as far along as perhaps they would've been... Continue Reading →
Peculiar horizontal cucumbers
As you'll know if you've been following our blog posts, we've been growing three varieties of outdoor cucumbers this year: Marketmore, Tasty King and Diva. My favourites are the Diva, a snack size cucumber. I harvested this one shortly after taking the photo and ate it before it even got out of the garden! Next... Continue Reading →
Outdoor cucumber progress
Our outdoor cucumbers are all doing well. The Marketmore are growing up their wire mesh nicely. Unlike the other plants, we are not tying these up with string, and are instead relying on the plants to climb the wire mesh and cling on using their tendrils. They seem to be getting on alright so far! Therefore, the... Continue Reading →
