The courgettes are certainly enjoying the hot weather we've been having. Well, providing they are kept adequately watered that is. They drink a lot of water on hot days, especially when they're grown in containers, so we're giving our water day and night at the moment. But it seems to be working. The first sowing... This weekend’s potting up
We had one container courgette left to pot up last weekend, a Black Forest. We did the others last weekend, but we ran out of pots that were large enough! Luckily, Dad came to the rescue and lent us another one! In addition to this sowing of courgettes, we also did an earlier sowing and... Continue Reading →
Courgette and pepper update
It was time to start potting up our second sowing of courgettes and some peppers into their lifetime pots last weekend. We've got a couple of new varieties of courgettes we're trying here: Eight Ball, Astia and Black Forest. They all produce slightly different fruit shapes, sizes and colours, but are all designed for growing... Continue Reading →
A short update on some of the other veg we have growing
We've got lots of things coming along in the greenhouse now, both vegetables and some bedding plants. We are growing them on in here to give them a bit of protection whilst the weather is still a bit unpredictable. The courgettes we're growing in containers were placed outside during the day for the past couple... Continue Reading →
Update on our Easter cucurbit sowings
It doesn't take courgettes and cucumbers long to germinate. As with our pak choi seedlings, these are pricked out into 3" pots in multipurpose compost. The plants will grow on in these pots until they are ready to plant out. These will need to be kept under glass until the risk of frost has passed,... Continue Reading →
Planting out our container courgettes
Our early sowing of Midnight courgettes were ready to plant out into their pots last weekend. As our greenhouse is still not fully erected, they are staying at my parent's house in the polytunnel to protect them from the colder weather. Which is lucky, as we've had some cold nights this week! We planted them... Continue Reading →
Easter seed sowing
We managed to make some time (between eating chocolate eggs and lots of other home baked goodies!) to do some gardening on Easter Sunday. This time, it was sowing some more courgettes, and sowing our first cucumbers of the season. The varieties we've gone for are: Piccolo - an round/oval shaped green striped courgette. They... An update on some of the other things we have growing
First up, we have an update on the Midnight courgettes. These are currently growing on in Dad's polytunnel, as we don't have anywhere to keep them just now. The greenhouse still needs to be assembled, but hopefully it won't be too long! It doesn't take them long though. Last week they were just starting to... Continue Reading →
Courgette progress
Courgettes are extremely fast growing compared to lots of other vegetable plants. Don't get me wrong, it'll still be a fair while before we have any courgettes to eat, but you can really see the difference in the size of the plant itself week-on-week. This is a quick photo showing how much the Midnight seedlings... Continue Reading →
A seed sowing recap
For those of you who have been following our blog for a while, you will have read much of the detail we're going to include below before. However, we think that sowing seeds well is super important when it comes to growing strong plants and ultimately being successful (most of the time!) with your vegetable... Continue Reading →
