This weekend, we sowed some more seeds in containers. This time, it was Solo and Golden Eye beetroot, the first being regular red beetroot, and the other a yellow coloured beetroot - a new variety for us this year. We also sowed some Mixed Leaf lettuce, Bulls Blood beet leaves, Flyaway carrots and Rougette radishes.... Continue Reading →
The greenhouse is filling up!
Last weekend, we filled the beds in the greenhouse with some top soil. We can now grow vegetables direct in the beds, or most likely, in containers that we stand on top of the soil in the beds. We'll make sure that the pots have holes in the bottom though, both for drainage, and also... Continue Reading →
A further update on our outdoor container crops
It's still a bit cold for lots of vegetables outside at the moment, especially because of the frosts we seem to keep having overnight! However, we've got some relatively hardy crops that we started off a month or so ago. The Little Gem lettuces are not quite as far along as perhaps they would've been... Continue Reading →
Planting out our early tomatoes
Now the greenhouse is up and running, we have somewhere to house the early tomato plants that Dad has been growing for us. These are a variety called Mimi, a lovely sweet yellow cherry tomato variety that we've grown for the past couple of years. We find that to grow the best tomato plants, i.e.... Continue Reading →
Progress on the vegetables we have growing outside
We've got a variety of veg already growing in containers out in the back garden. First up, we have the Falco turnips which took less than a week to germinate! The spacing I did with the seeds doesn't look too bad so far, but only time will tell as more of the seeds germinate! The... Continue Reading →
Planting out our container courgettes
Our early sowing of Midnight courgettes were ready to plant out into their pots last weekend. As our greenhouse is still not fully erected, they are staying at my parent's house in the polytunnel to protect them from the colder weather. Which is lucky, as we've had some cold nights this week! We planted them... Continue Reading →
An update on some of the other things we have growing
First up, we have an update on the Midnight courgettes. These are currently growing on in Dad's polytunnel, as we don't have anywhere to keep them just now. The greenhouse still needs to be assembled, but hopefully it won't be too long! It doesn't take them long though. Last week they were just starting to... Continue Reading →
The first container crops of 2021
We have a feeling we will be growing quite a few of our vegetables in containers this year, until we get a better idea of exactly how we want the garden to look/where we want to grow our veg. That's not a problem though - there are lots and lots of veg you can grow... Continue Reading →
Progress with the container courgettes
The first sowing of container courgettes are continuing in the way they started off - the British Summertime is growing quite wildly on the left hand side (probably because it is not designed to be shoved in a container!) and the Midnight which are the three on the left are growing incredibly compactly, as you... Harvesting the elephant garlic
We won a few elephant garlic cloves in one of our National Vegetable Society Essex District Association raffles at the beginning of 2020. We tried to grow garlic last year with little success, but we were up for giving it another go this year! We grew the garlic in multipurpose compost last year, but we... Continue Reading →
