We made a bit more progress with the greenhouse last weekend. This time, we needed to remove the old glazing foam that was stuck to the aluminium frame. This has got a bit old and dried out, so we'll look to replace it when we re-glaze the greenhouse. These are a couple of before and... Continue Reading →
Sowing turnips
We've still got a lot of crops left to sow for 2021, but it's still too early to start many of them off. Especially given we can only start things off outside for the moment (greenhouse pending!) One hardy crop we've grown for the last couple of years is turnips. So we sowed some Falco... Continue Reading →
An update on some of the other things we have growing
First up, we have an update on the Midnight courgettes. These are currently growing on in Dad's polytunnel, as we don't have anywhere to keep them just now. The greenhouse still needs to be assembled, but hopefully it won't be too long! It doesn't take them long though. Last week they were just starting to... Continue Reading →
Some more progress with the herbs
Since the last update, a few more of the herbs have germinated and been pricked out. This time, it's the moss curled parsley and Italian parsley. Like the other herbs, we are keeping these indoors for now until the chance of frost has passed. It won't be long before they can be hardened off and... Continue Reading →
Coriander and tarragon are the first to show
Within a week of sowing, both the coriander and tarragon had started to germinate and were ready to take off the propagator. Just like the seeds, the tarragon seedlings have come through and are absolutely tiny. Hopefully you can the couple that have germinated in the photo below, but you might need a magnifying glass!... Our first update on the tomatoes and courgettes
We sowed a number of varieties of tomatoes and some Midnight courgettes on 7 March. Below are some photos showing their progress by 14 March. It goes to show that although the plants themselves may take a little while to produce a fruit, it doesn't take long before they get moving and it's fun to... Continue Reading →
Sowing this year’s herb garden
We like to grow a few herbs each year, and we hope 2021 will be no different. There's nothing better than being able to go out into the garden over the summer months to pick a few sprigs/handfuls of herbs to put in whatever you're making for dinner. Quite a few different herbs we grow... Continue Reading →
The first container crops of 2021
We have a feeling we will be growing quite a few of our vegetables in containers this year, until we get a better idea of exactly how we want the garden to look/where we want to grow our veg. That's not a problem though - there are lots and lots of veg you can grow... Continue Reading →
A seed sowing recap
For those of you who have been following our blog for a while, you will have read much of the detail we're going to include below before. However, we think that sowing seeds well is super important when it comes to growing strong plants and ultimately being successful (most of the time!) with your vegetable... Continue Reading →
Quick shallot update
The Hative De Niort shallots that we planted out a couple of weeks ago are enjoying their new surroundings. All of them have now started to sprout, and have also sent roots out. It just goes to show that despite it still being reasonably cold at the moment (especially at night), that plants are happy... Continue Reading →
