Our Kermit and Baby Bell aubergines are growing away nicely in their 10 litre pots in the greenhouse. It's surprising how much they've grown in the short time since they've been potted up. As with our other container crops, we're watering these morning and night, including a high nitrogen liquid feed every couple of days.... Continue Reading →
Cucumber chaos
We've got a few varieties of cucumbers underway: Tasty King, Diva, Salt and Pepper and Striped Armenian. The Tasty King and Diva were sown first. As you can see, the Tasty King is starting to develop a couple of cucumbers now. And the Diva is even further ahead, as we harvested our first cucumber this... Continue Reading →
This weekend’s potting up
We had one container courgette left to pot up last weekend, a Black Forest. We did the others last weekend, but we ran out of pots that were large enough! Luckily, Dad came to the rescue and lent us another one! In addition to this sowing of courgettes, we also did an earlier sowing and... Continue Reading →
Courgette and pepper update
It was time to start potting up our second sowing of courgettes and some peppers into their lifetime pots last weekend. We've got a couple of new varieties of courgettes we're trying here: Eight Ball, Astia and Black Forest. They all produce slightly different fruit shapes, sizes and colours, but are all designed for growing... Continue Reading →
Relocating tomatoes
The tomatoes we've had growing on in the greenhouse were moved outside last weekend. At the same time, we placed a cane behind each plant about an inch from the stem, pushing it right to the base of the pot. The tomatoes will be tied up the cane every 4 to 6 inches to support... Continue Reading →
Container growing continues
Our onions are starting to bulb up now. Fingers crossed they carry on bulbing up to a good size before they stop growing. However, it probably won't be that long before they stop throwing up new leaves at which point they won't swell any more. On that basis, we are giving them a little bit... Continue Reading →
Some potting up needed doing
We had some potting up to do the other week: chard, soya beans and sweetcorn. Below are a few before and after photos! Chard We potted these up from their cell trays into 3" square pots in multipurpose compost. Soya beans We did the same with our soya beans. Unfortunately, the germination even from the... Progress with our sugar snap peas
Our first sowing of peas are growing well up their metal wire. However, they are a bit unruly to begin with, as not all the plants want to grow up the wire you provide them with unfortunately! Therefore, last weekend we pulled the net gently away from the plants and detached any tendrils that were... Continue Reading →
Sowing basil
Basil and Dill don't take as long to grow as the other herbs, therefore they didn't need sowing as early on. However, we sowed some last weekend. We filled a couple of 10 litre pots with multipurpose compost, then sprinkled a thin layer of Seed and Potting compost on top as it's finer and basil... Continue Reading →
