Our Kermit and Baby Bell aubergines are growing away nicely in their 10 litre pots in the greenhouse. It's surprising how much they've grown in the short time since they've been potted up. As with our other container crops, we're watering these morning and night, including a high nitrogen liquid feed every couple of days.... Continue Reading →
Planting out our cucumbers
We are trying a couple of new varieties of cucumbers this year, Salt and Pepper and Striped Armenian. Last weekend, it was time to plant them out in the greenhouse. We've put them in the corners of the greenhouse as you can see below. We planted them out in bottomless pots which we pushed into... Continue Reading →
Sugar snap peas 2021
We don't have anywhere set up to grow sugar snap peas yet. However, Dad got some started for us, and luckily the lockdown restrictions have been lifted enough here in Essex now that we are able to go and visit other private gardens, so I could plant them out! We intend to grow them in... Continue Reading →
Pak choi and sunflowers
We're also trying another new vegetable for 2021, pak choi. We really like the ones we buy in the supermarket with stir fry and Asian curries, so we thought we'd give growing some a go. The seeds look just like other cauliflowers and cabbages we've grown, which is not a surprise seeing as they are... Continue Reading →
Herb update
The herbs are mostly pricked out now into cell trays and are also growing on in Dad's polytunnel. Below are a few photos of the various sorts we've got growing. These plants will stay in these cell trays until they are ready to plant outside. Although the cells are not very big, these herbs are... Continue Reading →
Coriander and tarragon are the first to show
Within a week of sowing, both the coriander and tarragon had started to germinate and were ready to take off the propagator. Just like the seeds, the tarragon seedlings have come through and are absolutely tiny. Hopefully you can the couple that have germinated in the photo below, but you might need a magnifying glass!... Shallot planting
We're having a go at growing shallots for the first time this year. The variety we're going for is Hative de Niort, a variety that is often used for exhibition, but can also be used in the kitchen just the same. We're planting out slightly later than you ideally would (typically this could be done... Continue Reading →
A colourful update
As there's not much growing at this time of the year, we thought we'd provide a quick update on something that we're growing that is loving the colder weather! Our primroses certainly don't seem to be affected by the colder weather (albeit I'm not sure they have loved being covered in the snow that they... Continue Reading →
Seed sowing on a snowy day
After missing out on the snow completely the other week, much to my disgust, we were very much in the thick of it today. As we live in the South, it may not have been as much as some other parts of the UK got, but it was snow, and it settled, so that’s all... Continue Reading →
Christmas tidy up!
At this time of year, there isn't half as much going on in the garden as during the spring and summer months. The cold/wet/windy (or all three at the same time!) weather can also be a bit of a block to getting outside! However, hopefully it won't be too long before the weather warms up... Continue Reading →
