One morning last week, I was watering the garden and I noticed that our Big Beef tomato plant was starting to lean. As I filled each can of water, I noticed that it was leaning more and more and we were at a real risk that the plant was going to completely fall over and... Continue Reading →
The summer harvest is beginning
We've been waiting patiently, for some of our veg to start producing fruits and they've come good over the past couple of weeks. First up we've got the courgettes. Here, we have four different varieties (from left to right): Midnight, Black Forest, Astia and Eight Ball. The last three are all new varieties to us... Continue Reading →
Our shallot harvest
Our Hative De Niort shallots have now split and formed new shallots. Most have formed four bulbs, although a few formed only three and others a lot more! We haven't done anything with them since we planted them out, so they are a really low maintenance crop. They only really need a bit of water... Continue Reading →
Pak choi harvest
We were right that the pak choi were nearly ready to harvest. And luckily we did, as they've started to go to seed now with all the hot weather. They were still fine to eat though, flower heads included! Below is a photo of our first harvest with we had with some salmon and veg... Continue Reading →
Courgette catch up
The courgettes are certainly enjoying the hot weather we've been having. Well, providing they are kept adequately watered that is. They drink a lot of water on hot days, especially when they're grown in containers, so we're giving our water day and night at the moment. But it seems to be working. The first sowing... Start of the week update
Soya beans The soya beans finally seem to have got off their feet. We only have four plants, but hopefully we'll still get some sort of crop. In fact, we need to Google how you grow them on, as we haven't grown these before! For now, they seem to be doing alright in their 3"... Continue Reading →
What else have we got growing in the greenhouse?
Our Kermit and Baby Bell aubergines are growing away nicely in their 10 litre pots in the greenhouse. It's surprising how much they've grown in the short time since they've been potted up. As with our other container crops, we're watering these morning and night, including a high nitrogen liquid feed every couple of days.... Continue Reading →
Cucumber chaos
We've got a few varieties of cucumbers underway: Tasty King, Diva, Salt and Pepper and Striped Armenian. The Tasty King and Diva were sown first. As you can see, the Tasty King is starting to develop a couple of cucumbers now. And the Diva is even further ahead, as we harvested our first cucumber this... Continue Reading →
Container growing continues
Our onions are starting to bulb up now. Fingers crossed they carry on bulbing up to a good size before they stop growing. However, it probably won't be that long before they stop throwing up new leaves at which point they won't swell any more. On that basis, we are giving them a little bit... Continue Reading →
Some potting up needed doing
We had some potting up to do the other week: chard, soya beans and sweetcorn. Below are a few before and after photos! Chard We potted these up from their cell trays into 3" square pots in multipurpose compost. Soya beans We did the same with our soya beans. Unfortunately, the germination even from the...
